The support economy

Shoshona Zuboff and her husband have explained the frustrations we have with firms that seem to try to understand our needs and wants in the marketplace of goods and services, but usually don't meet them appropriately, reliably or consistently.

This is my discussion on how to make commercial work more in tune with what citizens need. We seek support for our life activities when we can't be self-sufficient.

This seems to fit with the recent upsurge in so-called service-dominant logic for marketing.

  1. Zuboff's book is a tour de force in putting into historical perspective the transition from an increasingly outmoded 'modern' enterprise logic to an alternative ecological enterprise logic that recognises the significance of relationship value.

Puts consumerism, business, commerce, marketing, and sustainability into a common perspective for the future of society.

  2. Will British Airways succumb to the obvious profiteering cost-cutting that their major catering supplier GateGourmet is proposing? They plan to introduce halal meat into most, if not all, airline meals - but this offends the quality and moral standards of many BA customers.

    Watch that space!
